Give Labor takes the best of social good and helps job seekers who are often left with more question and frustration than answers.<br \/>\nFor those job seekers who didn\u2019t reach out as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartrecruiters.com\/static\/blog\/volunteer-for-give-labor-day\/\">Give Labor volunteers<\/a> this week, I want to help.\u00a0 Here are 5 things you need to do right now to help you land that job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use Micorsoft Word Not a .pdf to Apply.\u00a0 <\/strong>Maybe you have a beautifully designed resume and graphic masterpiece.\u00a0 You upload it to my company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartrecruiters.com\">applicant tracking system<\/a>, but the recruiter doesn\u2019t see it.\u00a0 The information isn\u2019t searchable like a word doc and so I look past your resume because there are two hundred candidates applying for the exact same position.\u00a0 Unless a job opening specifically asks for a portfolio of your work or a pdf, stick to a resume in Microsoft Word.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be Honest About Your Skills.\u00a0 <\/strong>Good recruiters and hiring managers can smell a rat.\u00a0 Don\u2019t waste your time or mine by applying for a job you aren\u2019t qualified for.\u00a0 List your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartrecruiters.com\/static\/blog\/does-job-history-matter\/\">work experience<\/a> openly and honestly as possible.\u00a0 I want to hire good candidates who can do the job.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have those skills, volunteer at a non-profit or attend vo-tech classes to get the experience you need.\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly what I did when I wanted to learn how to use graphic design tools like Photoshop.\u00a0 These skills have proved invaluable to me in my career in so many different ways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance Matters.\u00a0 <\/strong>Whether it\u2019s your resume, cover letter, or dress for an interview, job seekers are being judged.\u00a0 Recruiters make assumptions on your skills and aptitude at a moment\u2019s notice.\u00a0 It\u2019s a moment that can cost you an interview or a job offer.\u00a0 You can help control these things by making sure your marketing materials and personal house is in order.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Manage Your Social Profiles.\u00a0 <\/strong>While this tip seems to permeate nearly every career and job search blog out there, it begs to be repeated.\u00a0 Recruiters are using social media to source and investigate the online you.\u00a0 Keep all your accounts professional and free of offensive materials.\u00a0 This includes politics and religious information as I see an increasing number of passionate political updates on Facebook.
